gimmicky 

'Gimmicky' is used to describe something that attracts the attention from mainstream media, but when explored in-depth it turns out to be rather underwhelming and overhyped.
An item or product is said to be 'gimmicky' if it lacks innovation or any outstanding traits.
Todd: "Hey man, have you seen the new game that came out recently?"

Jesse: "What game..? Oh, *that* game. Meh, it looks kinda gimmicky."

gimmick poster

A member of a forum or news group who takes on some personality in the form of something familiar or comical.

A gimmick poster typically will not reveal personal details about their selves or opinions unless it matches the persona they have created or are borrowing from.

Note: Most Gimmick Posters are multis. typically they are well known regular members of the forum or newsgroup.
You know that HomerSimpson is actually JohnDoe123 dont you? yeah, he's just another multi. JohnDoe123 is always makeing up new Gimmick Posters.

A buzzword to denote a product or service that, although showing much promise for paradigm shift-creating greatness, languishes in the ether as a result of failing to prove its worth beyond gimmicky uses & implementations.
However, despite years of serious development and now wider adoption by content providers and consumers alike, it has yet to emerge from the gimmicksphere.

Purple Patch

Like walking over small green hills in the countryside then coming across a purple patch of flowers, thus it being unique and out of the ordinary.
