traumabait 

When you use fictional traumatic experiences and/or recreations in order to manipulate other‘s emotions, including „based on a true story“ versions, to invoke a large (or when real events are being exaggerated, larger) emotional response from the viewer.

Although common on social media, traumabaiting takes place throughout society. From Fake GoFundMe‘s to Hollywood movies, Traumabaiting is all around us.

Basically, if the aim is to leave the viewer in tears with the aim of profiting off of them in some way and you are not accurately representing the true facts, it’s traumabait.

„Did you see that the gofundme we donated to for that homeless guy was a scam? They traumabaited us hard.“

„Did you see that guy on TikTok making videos of his kid fake drowning? it’s traumabait af.“

„Did you see the that new Netflix True Crime show? They just made up a bunch of crap, half of it didn’t happen. Why exaggerate a story that’s already so wild and crazy? They just traumabaited the audience into thinking it was good.

„You know Titanic is just traumabait, right? Like yeah, the real ship sank, but Jack and Rose weren’t real people, don’t feel bad for them.“

traumabitch 

A character who is relatable in all the ways that they are unsympathetic and dysfunctional. Their rage is cathartic (even when it's not intended to be morally correct), and have a tragic backstory that the consumer can see themself in. They are also, on some level, a power fantasy.

Traumaliated 

The act of being traumatized as the victim of an attacker and then subsequently humiliated by the same person, who has then taken sympathy on you because they've realised how pathetic your existence is.

Example: You were just robbed at a cash machine by a stranger, after a few seconds of walking away, they turn round and come back, placing the money they just stole in your hand and say "I saw your bank balance, I'm sorry".

- Inspired by real events, the term was coined by "Vuthy VT" in a comment which received over 600 likes in 4 hours!

I think if that happened to me, I'd be pretty Traumaliated too.

Accidents and illnesses on a vacation that ruin the trip. Food poisoning, broken bones and medical illnesses force a person to go to the hospital or remain in their hotel room. trauma, accident, crash, fall, food poisoning, diarrhea, vacation, fun, cruise, cruise ship, hotel, beach, ocean, luxury, party, family reunion

During my cruise, I had nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and a massive headache for 6 days. On the last day of the trip, I felt better. It was a traumacation.
