Mattsplaining

When your friend Matt has a compulsion to explain why things are the way they are, even though they are dumb.
"Why can't I order from an Ontario restaurant through UberEats in Gatineau even though the cities are only divided by a canal ?? This is dumb."

Matt - " Actually because Hull is technically in another province and Ontario and Quebec have different health standards, and it's not dumb because health standards are important and allowing one province to dictate another province's health standards is even more irresponsible. Order from the website."

"Matt...you are mattsplaining again."

Westsplain

How Westerners condescendingly explain to non-Westerners concepts and current affairs from a purely Western perspective without any local language or local knowledge comprehension. It often also often involves hypocrisy ie not practising what one preaches.
Michael would always Westsplain to Mei why China should treat the Tibetan people better.

Westsplaining

A form of condescending explanation where someone from a Western context explains to non-Westerners the "truth" about their own situation, often while dismissing their perspectives as culturally biased or insufficiently objective. The term combines "Western" with "mansplaining" to capture the dynamic of assumed epistemic authority based on Western location. Westsplaining typically involves universalizing Western experience, treating Western frameworks as neutral, and dismissing non-Western perspectives as particular or biased. It's a form of intellectual colonialism dressed as explanation.
"I tried to explain my country's political dynamics. Response from a Western academic: 'Let me clarify how democracy actually works.' That's Westsplaining—assuming that Western frameworks are universal, that your local knowledge is just perspective, and that their outsider view is objective truth. Westsplaining is what happens when privilege becomes pedagogy and explanation becomes erasure."

Westsplaining

When someone from the political West learns about a country’s politics from a couple of TikToks and then explains it like they’re the expert to people who actually live under that regime.

Usually involves disregarding firsthand experience while trusting a viral video, headline, infographic, or thread instead.
“An Iranian woman told Jim what life under the ajatollah regime is actually like and he immediately started westsplaining, sending her a TikTok and saying ‘This TikTok explains it perfectly.’
