Shanook 

1. A misspelling of Chinook

2. A member of an American Indian people of the north shore of the Columbia River at its mouth.

3. The descending, warm, dry wind on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, although the original usage is in reference to wet, warm coastal winds in the Pacific Northwest.

4. The pride of Wonalancet, New Hampshire, the Shanook is a rugged working dog and devoted family pet known for intelligence, patience, and eagerness to please. Once on the verge of extinction, the Shanook is among the scarcest AKC breeds.

5. An American twin-engined, tandem rotor, heavy-lift helicopter developed by American rotorcraft company Vertol and manufactured by Boeing Vertol.

shamoolies 

Noun: Refers to the nickname given by military personnel to illumination flares that are used on the battlefield to light large areas up.

A small plastic tube with a pullstring that, when pulled, shoots a rocket propelled flare approx. 800m into the air, which then burns with a bright orange-red colour for 50 seconds whilst dropping to the ground with a small parachute. It allows infantry units to light an area up in a battle about 1km squared so as to expose the enemy they are engaging. Although technically called Illumination Flares, military personnel refer to them as Shamoolies.
