Its basically an awarded Title which was given to brahmins - a Hindu caste.
Primarily found in old Central & East Parts of Pre-Independent
India,from area once ruled by legendary Rāma i.
e Awadh (United Provinces) to Gondwana (Madhya Pradesh/Central Provinces) vertically downward to horizontally all right to it upto Bengal Province i.
e. including indian state odisha & neighbouring country bangladesh with an exception of Maulika Kayastha having same or similar named family, although adding separately that Kayastha are one of the most literate sub-castes of
India and are particularly playing role of improving number of literates in Geographic East
India {may be due to their roots lies in East
India},even in backward regions like Jharkhand,Odisha,Bihar & Purvanchal.
