“Faith. Heritage. Excellence.”
Founded by Johari Kovu, a born-and-raised native of Philadelphia, MUROON is an African Muslim organization established to promote discipline, unity, leadership, heritage, and Black excellence through the guidance of Allah, the Qur’an, and the Sunnah.
Inspired by the legacy of the Maroons — African freedom fighters and rebel communities who resisted oppression and fought for independence — MUROON represents resilience, self-respect, honor, and collective advancement.
MUROON does not promote racism, hatred, supremacy, or division in any form. The organization respects and embraces Muslims of all races and backgrounds, recognizing the worldwide brotherhood and sisterhood of Islam. Its mission is to combat the negative image placed upon Black communities by proving that Black people can unite, organize, build, and achieve greatness together through faith, discipline, and purpose.
The organization places strong emphasis on African lineage, ancestral preservation, and cultural identity. Membership within MUROON is reserved for individuals whose mother and father are both Black, as the organization was specifically created to preserve and strengthen African heritage, legacy, and community structure.
