In-game currency given for free to
the game's playerbase as apology for maintenance, glitches, or other
issues or obstacles in game play. Derived from a portmanteau of the
words "apology" and "gems", because many games use gems, jewels, or diamonds to represent in-game currency. Apologems often consist of particularly valuable forms of in-game currency, such as those which can be obtained via microtransactions.
Sarah: Ugh, the server maintenance for Love
Nikki has been going on for an hour longer than the developers said it would!
Kate: It
sucks, but hopefully they'll
send us all some apologems to compensate.
