The flip-flops may be made out of paper and/or cardboard and are generally obtained at the Chinese beauty salon where the chancletera gets her $5 pedicures. If in a dressy mood, the chancletera may upgrade to plastic flip-flops purchased at the 99-cent store next door to her favorite nail salon.

Woman who likes to walk in flip flops, even if she is dressed up, she will always wear flip flops. Generally Puerto Rican or of some other Hispanic origin, she is a woman who always walks noisily making the characteristic sound that flip flops make when hitting her soles. She also likes to take off her flip flops, which can get her feet dirty.
