A fruit bat that feeds mainly on nectar and pollen, forming very large colonies in caves from Africa to the Solomon Islands.

Origin
Late 18th century: from French roussette, feminine of Old French rousset ‘reddish’, from roux ‘red’.
Egyptian rousette is a species of Old World fruit bat.
