NWOBHM

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal

A movement in British rock. To get the full picture you have to understand that the 1976/77 punk explosion drove a lot of mainstream rock bands underground, many of them didn't survive. However the fanbase remained and in pubs and clubs in working class areas such as East London, Newcastle on Tyne and the West Midlands new bands started to form taking on the musician ship of the older 'dinosaur' rock outfits, but using the new punk method of doing things; brash attitudes, agressive sounds, self management / control etc.

The punk movement in the UK started to run out of steam as a mainstream musical form in the summer of 1979 and the new metal bands started to emerge from the pubs and clubs. Early examples were Saxon, Magnum and Raven. They were joined in 1980 by acts that were to become household names - Iron Maiden, Def Leppard etc.

NWOBHM was a very broad church that embrassed art rock (Pallas / Haze), glam (Wrathchild / Tygertailz), Early death and proto-thrash (Venom / Warfare) etc, as well as countless denim and leather bands. (Angelwitch / Demon)

The excepted period for NWOBHM is summer 1979 to autumn 1985. After this point NWOBHM became a tag to refer to bands in the Iron Maiden / Judas Preist vien (Marshall Law / Strangeways / Idol Rich)

The style has since influenced most modern forms of rock and metal.
The term was originally coined by Malcome Dome in the April '79 issue of 'Sounds' magazine.

NWOBHM

New wave of british heavy metal. Probably the only thing that stopped punk from running the place, started when punk overtook the mainstream and rock was thrown underground. It was during this time (in my opinion) that metal was born, examples would be Iron maiden, Judas priest and AC/DC. When punk finally was realised to be shite, rock re-amerged as metal.
NWOBHM proves that there really is a God.

NWOAHM

1. New Wave of American Heavy Metal, a musical movement that doesn't actually exist, most supposed NWOAHM bands are actually metalcore, mallcore, emo, hardcore punk or nu metal.

2. New Wave of American Heavy Metal, a description that posers give to the mallcore bands they listen to in order to pretend that they listen to real metal, as opposed to the false metal.

3. a complete disgrace to true metal fans everywhere, that fact that it is related at all to the incredible new wave of British heavy metal makes true metalheads everywhere want to puke.

NWOAHM

An even newer form of nu metal.
A kind of music that mixes NYC hardcore pink and heavy metal.
The vocals are harsh and screaming in a hardcore fashion, the music normally uses a lot of Swedish death metal kind of cheap tricks and a lot of two-fret power-chord riffs.
Hey, Trivium are so NWOAHM... I don't get it why kids think they are true metal.

NWOAHM

New Wave Of American Heavy Metal. The current scene of true (and quite brutal) heavy metal from the States. Takes its cue from the New Wave Of Britsh Heavy Metal before it, which mixed traditonal British metal with some UK punk rock influences, the NWOAHM mixes the US thrash scene such as Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth) and mixes it with the NYC hardcore scene (like Black Flag or The Dillinger Escape Plan) in order to create a truly kick arse and brutally heavy sound. Proof that metal still kicks arse and is still advancing.
Good examples are Chimaira, Hatebreed, God Forbid and Killswitch Engage to name but a few. The bands are so well heavy, Chimaira easily top Slayer (including Reign In Blood) and they're not even the heaviest in the genre. Rock on!!!!
