Discomsetivity 

Discomsetivity refers to the intentional exchange of discomfort in conversations that address sensitive topics, in order to foster a space for reflection and examinations of one's conscious thoughts and feelings towards others. It emphasizes the importance of listesting, acknowledging distressing behavior and engaging in a transmission model of communication that challenges norms, particularly in the context of decolonization, marginalization and identity politics.

‘’Yesterday, Melanie had an important conversation with one of our colleagues about the insulting behavior at work. Melanie responded with a discomsetivity to challenge her colleague’s defense stance regarding these actions.’'

By being interested in establishing complaints as a practice of dialogue, the term ‘’Discomtivity’’ is a crucial tool for responses in distress narratives and power structures. My interest in complaints starts from observing others' reactions to them. Despite their potential for offering new perspectives, complaints often carry a negative image, as Sara Ahmed ‘’Complaint as a Queer Method’’ depicts. Complainers addressing sensitive topics like identity and abuse can be labeled as controversial individuals with their confrontation deemed inconsequential.

The complainer, by addressing their feelings of discomfort face accusations, shaming and isolation as a response. I believe this pattern happens as complaints related to gender, racial and disability discrimination are the result of prejudicial treatment and discomfort which forces the power structures for self-reflection. Drawing from the interview of Yvette Mutumba on ‘’Why Decolonizing Institutions ‘Has to Hurt’ , discomfort is important for transformative dialogue. Engaging in discomfort exchange can develop a new practice, where complaints become messages promoting active listening and processing othe’s discomfort rather than talking, creating a more understanding dialogue. Especially in the context of decolonization Discomsetivity is important to understand every individual perspective without a colonial framework.
