It's the #1 written ship for Free! on archive of our own, and the most
popular ship in the fandom to this
day. It's an incredibly wholesome ship that plays on the best friends to lovers trope, which generally features them having a bond where they don't actually need to talk to
get what the other is thinking and needing each other through each chapter in their lives.
Everyone comes in "pairs" in Free!, and Makoto and Haru are the best example of this. Their character songs are released the same
day as each other, Makoto has multiple songs singing about Haru, they have multiple duets, and they are often see next to each other or looking at
one another in official
art. There's countless scenes just featuring the relationship between the two.
Nagisa, their other friend within the swim club, has hinted a couple of times of there being something more between them as
