Amalgamation of the words 'Spags' and 'Formal', originally meaning a simulated Formal Hall at 'La Spagettata', a popular Italian restaurant in Durham, UK, where the atmosphere and heavy drinking traditions of a Formal Hall, a formal University dinner, are practiced.

The term can, in theory, also be used to describe a similar meal at any restaurant.
