pulled a hicksy

Share definition Flag
Definition:
Surviving months on site, in the bush, or doing legitimately dangerous work without a single issue—then immediately injuring yourself doing something ridiculously simple as soon as you get home.
Origin:
Named after a bloke known as Hicksy who spent months working up bush without so much as a scratch—dodging all the usual chaos that comes with remote work. Within 24 hours of getting home, he tripped over in a completely safe environment, split his head open, and walked away with 20 stitches and a black eye.
(Extended use) Successfully navigating the hard part of anything, only to completely stuff it at the easiest stage.

Variations:
Pulled a Hicksy — past tense
Hicksy moment — the exact second it all goes wrong
Full Hicksy — when it’s especially dumb or catastrophic
Example Sentences: “Bloke did six months remote without a scratch, got home and slipped on his own tiles—20 stitches. Proper Hicksy.”
“Careful carrying that, don’t go doing a Hicksy before knock-off.”
Alt Options (different flavours):

“Six months in the bush no dramas… 6 minutes at home—Full Hicksy.”

“Dodged danger for months, got folded by furniture. Classic Hicksy.”

“Elite in chaos, liability at home. Doing a Hicksy.”

Violin Hickey

Share definition Flag
A red mark located somewhere on a violin/violists neck area (Location varies) from excessive practicing.

Due to looking a lot like a hickey, they are usually referred to as the "Violin hickey", But in the medical world, it is referred to as "Fiddler's neck" Which is much tackier.

Violinists/Violists get these on the left side, so anyone claiming a hickey on the right side has a violin hickey is really a whore trying to cover up by looking cool.

Hickeys are most often located under the jaw, in the mid-neck area, on the collarbone, or near the front of the shoulder.

Some hickeys are caused by a reaction to the nickel in the metal holding the chin rest on, while others are caused by the constant movement of the instrument against the skin.

This red mark is often considered a "Badge of Honor" among musicians, although they are actually quite painful.
Guy 1: Oh man, is that a hickey? What've you been doing?

Guy 2: No, man. That's just my Violin Hickey.

Hicksploitation

Share definition Flag
A genre of movies most popular in the 1970s but stretching from the 1950s to modern day in which the setting of the film was the American Deep South aka the Heart of Dixie. While this could range anywhere from Virginia to West Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, and West Virginia were the most popular

Hicksploitation films are NOT simply films set in the South but featured certain aspects that made them true hicksploitation. Most notable of these is the appearance of backwoods folks, the notorious hillbilly, and usually (but not always) in a negative context, typically as a foil against the "citified" interloper. Hicksploitation saw its zenith with the release of Deliverance in 1972. Hillbillies in these films are typically shown as shamelessly ignorant, sexually degenerate, and prone to violence. Other hallmarks of the hickspolitation films are sweaty, sweaty men, references to moonshining (though illegal production of marijuana has replaced bootleg liquor in some modern films), incestuous relations, deformed children of incest, and frequent appearance of the Confederate Battle Flag aka Stars and Bars.

Some of the best known examples of hicksploitation would be Deliverance, the Walking Tall series and the recent remake of Straw Dogs.
"Some people like classy depictions of rural poor like Winter's Bone, I prefer my white trash in gritty, nasty hicksploitation films. Give me Wrong Turn!"

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.

Successful strivers:
- Barack Obama
- Harold Koh
