You do this so that others will perceive you that way and assume you must be that good. They then give you business or other advancement, until the success is real instead of faked.

You max out your credit cards on a suit far beyond your budget, and lease an expensive luxury car in order to meet potential clients, future boss, or future inlaws to seal the deal.
