Phayder itself comes from the game Unreal Tournament. Released in 2000, the game earned Game Of The Year status, and was very popular for a time. The Phayder portion of the game was from a team of terrorists called the Necris. their male operatives were Phayders.

Originally inspired by combining the words player and lazerbeam it has now evolved to it's current definition.
