Detournement

Share definition Flag
A term coined by Guy Debord and the Situationist International (SI) movement of the 1960's, Detournement is usually translated into English as ‘diversion’ and was the method of artistic creation used by the situationists. It was, in effect, plagiarism where both the source and the meaning of the original work was subverted to create a new work. In the SI’s own words "there is no Situationist art, only Situationist uses of art." Detournement is distinct from ‘theft’ plagiarism, which only subverts the source of the material and post-modern ‘ironic quotation’ plagiarism which only subverts the meaning of the material, the source becoming the meaning. The SI used detournement in films, art, graphics for their journal and in posters that detourned comics during the events of the Paris uprising of May68. Many Situationist ideas became 'popularised' further through the British Punk Rock explosion of the 1970's. As a movement it cast a lengthy shadow over subsequent developments in music, inspiring furious unresolved debates among hapless commentators over it's real legacy.
Detournement can be witnessed first hand on fortnightly Saturdays at The Joint, West Street, Brighton, UK. 10pm-2am. Inept smart-arse DJs play any record alluding to a Punk Rock aesthetic or vague notions of 'Outsider' chic.

Djournie

Share definition Flag
Djournie is a name I'm pretty sure not a lot of people have, but I think Djournie's have a hard time talking about their problems in real life then online, it is hard for them to speak their mind since they are so kind and don't like hurting people's feelings, they are thoughtful but sometimes speak to much where they don't know when to stop, they sometimes hate their apprence but other times they don't, they try hard to fit in every group they are in, and they hang out with the first friend they made from either school or work, they love their family more than the world and they can easily pull a person and fall in love easily, They even like a person who is sometimes mean, bad things about them is that if you separate for a long time they might not remember but if you tell them you're name and when you guys were together they will continue on like no separation happened, . Djournie is a hard person to understand since they don't know what to do, they break down whenever and randomly so if you're friends with a Djournie, be happy they are loyal and know when a person is bad and will do whatever they can for you.
Djournie is going on a road trip

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.

- Barack Obama
- Harold Koh
