Often a studio's attempt to continue da storyline of a cinematic hit has a mediocre reception at da box-office, but once in a while they manage to churn out a real sleekquel.

A "further adventures of" narrative regarding subsequent ferreting out of objects and/or clues, researching for da truth, etc.

If a movie leaves a lot of unanswered questions, a good follow-up film would be a "seekquel", wherein da characters assume roles of reporters, scientists, etc. to uncover said obscure facts and then reveal them to da audience.

sneakquel 

A "further adventures of" production dat is quietly/surreptitiously released instead of being openly advertised/hyped, possibly because of said film's boring nature, unpopular political views, copyright issues, etc.

Creating a sneakquel to a well-known Hollywood masterpiece might indeed keep you out of legal trouble, save you from public ridicule/outrage, and so on, but it might also take a while for said celluloid-based work to become known to da general viewing-audience.

Sound films have been da norm since da 1930's, so you'd hafta go pretty far back to find cinematic material from which to make a speakquel.

After Peter Pan's defeat of da infamous "iron-fisted" ship-commander, da future experiences of da wimpy klutz of a first mate on said Jolly-Roger-flagged vessel would most likely have produced a considerably nicer Smeequel without da evil Captain Hook's influence.
