inclusion rider

A film industry contract provision that requires diversity in casting.
"What if those A-listers simply added an equity clause or an inclusion rider into their contract? Now, what does that mean? Well, you probably don't know but the typical feature film has about 40 to 45 speaking characters in it. I would argue that only 8 to 10 of those characters are actually relevant to the story. ( . . . ) The remaining 30 or so roles, there's no reason why those minor roles can't match or reflect the demography of where the story is taking place. An equity rider by an A-lister in their contract can stipulate that those roles reflect the world in which we actually live." - Stacy Smith at TEDWomen 2016

Inclusion Rider”, also referred to as a legal rider, which is an attachment or amendment applied to a legal document in order to modify it without rewriting it but to stipulate in this case equality (i.e. specifically gender & racial representation in productions).

inclusion rider

Inclusion Rider is a Hollywood movie and TV product contract term means “you can ask for and/or demand at least 50 percent diversity in not only the casting, but also the crew.” This made famous by 2018 Academy Award winning Best Actress Frances Dormand in her acceptance speech for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. It's about reflecting the world we live in.

An inclusion rider might require the cast to be 50 percent female, 40 percent underrepresented ethnic groups, 20 percent people with disabilities and 5 percent LGBT people.
Frances McDormand, who won the award for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, ended her acceptance speech with the words "inclusion rider0" after highlighting all female Academy Award nominees.
