Hackell

verb: to make an attack from a perceived position of strength only to retreat when met with force, while continuing to fire blindly. Unlike cover fire, Hackelling involves firing wildly in an attempt to confuse pursuit and/or create enough frustration and collateral damage that the original target disengages.

Once it became obvious that he was outgunned, the attacker began hackelling in an effort to escape while appearing to be stronger than he was.
