Circular Argument

Share definition Flag
An argument that goes nowhere. Though a person believes he or she is arguing a point, the argument does not progress because the individual provides the same point for the effect as he/she does for the cause (i.e., the effect is just the cause stated in different words). In short, what is given as the effect is already made obvious--either overtly or implicitly--by the supporting reason provided.

To say, "I didn't like that movie because it was really bad," is to provide a premise in support of the opinion that goes without saying. It goes without saying that if one does not like the movie, he/she will not believe the movie is good. Likewise, statements such as "I am Bainz, so I am drunk," "I enjoy listening to music when I study because music helps me to study," and "I wear Fant-Ho shades because they're the best shades" are equally circular in nature. A true argument would supply support that explains WHY Bainz is always drunk, HOW music helps the person's study habits, and WHAT makes Fant-Ho shades better than other brands.

Dumb people write circular arguments.
Swain stated the obvious when he made the circular argument, "I am Swain; therefore, I am a clown-bitch." I was like, duh!

elliotic argument

Share definition Flag
An argument that is so bad that it is instantly destroyed by everyone who encounters it. An argument that is so clearly false that the only person who could possibly take it seriously is someone who is borderline retarded. To be a true elliotic argument the argument must be defended by a deluded fool who despite his extreme inadequacies suffers from a severe case of megalomania.
have you seen this guy who calls himself The AK? His arguments are so bad that they qualify as elliotic arguments.

Argument recycler

Share definition Flag
Someone that uses the same argument against you that you just used against them earlier in the day, that generally resulted in a win. The argument recycler will often use the previous argument out of context making them look dumber than when they were wrong about whatever started the argument. A technique most often used by poor debaters or women.
"Caroline is such an argument recycler".
"Yeah, I beat her earlier in the day in an argument about the benefits of chop stix versus forks, then this afternoon she tried to use the same argument to prove lesbians and sperm whales can make babies, ridiculous"

(n) (AR-gyoo-MEN-turh-TAYNE-mint)

A source of entertainment, according to the lowest common denominator of human intelligence, derived from watching people argue and generally hate each other. This is most commonly found on situational reality television shows, reality game shows, staged abomination-abortions of popular culture, and mostly anything on Bravo, MTV, or the Style Network.

(Derived from Italian for "obnoxious attention-seeking whores")
Girlfriend: "Oh m'gyah did you see The Jersey Shore the other night? Fackin' Vinny and Paulie fought each other, but neither of them actually threw a punch! What a bunch of pussies, right? It's such a train wreck!"

You: "Woman, get out of my fucking apartment and don't come back until you get it through your head that this awful, goddamn argumentertainment is systematically making you EVEN DUMBER, were that even POSSIBLE, than you were before."

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.
