A term shouted in a loud and powerful voice in order to declare ones presence and stature (usually accompanied by a fist or spear raise). Strikes fear and horror into others. Especially effective against Persian armies.

An ancient city in S Greece: the capital of Laconia and the chief city of the Peloponnesus, at one time the dominant city of Greece: famous for strict discipline and training of soldiers. Also called Lacedaemon.

Spartan Shower

An ice-cold shower taken daily to enhance one's mental toughness and physical well-being. Spartans, for whom valued strength and pride as matters of high reputation, believed hot water was for the weak and emasculated; they frequently immersed in cold water for vigor and increased vitality. The Spartan Shower has numerous benefits including:

I am spartacus 

Refers to a scene in the movie "Spartacus" starring Kirk Douglas as Spartacus. After the army of former Roman slaves led by Spartacus is defeated in battle by legions of the Roman army, a Roman general stands before the captured surviving members of the slave army and demands that they turn over Spartacus, or else all of the former slaves will be executed. Upon hearing this and not wanting his friends to be executed, Spartacus stands up and says "I am Spartacus." However, the loyalty of his friends is so great that each of them stands forward in succession, shouting "I am Spartacus!" until the shouts dissolve into a cacophony of thousands of former slaves each insisting "I am Spartacus!" Bewildered and still not knowing which of them is Spartacus, but impressed by the loyalty he inspires in his army, the Roman general has all of the slaves crucified in a miles-long display alongside the Appian Way leading back to Rome.

Thus the phrase "I am Spartacus!" is often used to humorously start a chorus of responses of "No, I am Spartacus" among a group.

Person enters chat room and types "I am Spartacus."

100 other people in the chat room then respond with "No, I am Spartacus!", "I am Spartacus!", etc.

Pull a Sparty 

Doing everything possible to fail miserably at any task after success appeared inevitable. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Being one's worst enemy. A reference to the tendency of the Michigan State Football team to dominate 3 1/2 quarters only to implode and give the game away to their opponent, resulting in a frustrating defeat.

Example 1: Bill overachieved all year to get that promotion, but got fired for sending that joke about his boss to the whole company. Bill really Pulled a Sparty.

Example 2: That girl has been into Jeff all night. I hope he doesn't Pull a Sparty and tell her about his Dungeons and Dragons collection.

Getting thrashed in competition. The word has its origins in the 38-0 beatdown that the Michigan State Spartans suffered at the hands of Alabama on December 31st, 2015.

Jeb Bush is getting spartaned in the New Hampshire primary.
