A Golden Globe Award is an accolade presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to recognize excellence in film, television both domestic and foreign. The annual formal ceremony and dinner at which the awards are presented is a major part of the film industry's awards season, which culminates each year with the Academy Awards.

The 1st Golden Globe Awards were held in January 1944 at the 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles. The 68th Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best in film and television for 2010, was presented on January 16, 2011, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, where they have been held annually since 1961.

They're the awards that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in theory gives to the best of cinema and television. They divide everything in two categories: comedy and drama. Once upon a time, the Golden Globes used to be taken seriously, but in recent years their nominees are movies that didn't even intended to be awarded (The Tourist, Bridesmaids, RED, Alice in Wonderland, etc.) and flicks that didn't even deserved it (Avatar the most notable example).

Since the rating drops in these past years, the HFPA has turned to the most desperate gimmicks like having the annoying comedian Ricky Gervais as its host and disposable teen idols like Megan Fox and Justin Bieber as presenters.

Golden Globes injustices:
a) Avatar winning best drama movie and District 9 being ignored in the category.
b) Glee winning over The Big Bang Theory as best comedy series.
c) Terri Hatcher winning as best comedy actress in a TV series while her superior co-star Marcia Cross didn't get anything.

Boffin

British slang for a scientist or technical expert, esp . when the speaker is not certain of the expert’s specific field of study. Not necessarily derogatory, but typically used by persons without a technical background. In the US, the equivalent would be “egghead”, “squint”, or “geek.”

Origin of the word is unknown. Started sometime in World War 2. Given the typical evolution of British slang, could easily have started because what these experts did was confusing or “baffling” to the common person.

Pee Calculus

When you have to pee in a movie but don’t want to miss anything, and must do the following mental equation: will the amount I have to pee cause enough discomfort to diminish my attention capacity for the remainder of the movie to an extent which is greater than the amount of the movie I would miss by making a mad dash to the restroom.

I saw Satantango last night, wonderful film but by the 5th hour I had to start doing pee calculus.
