Noun: The embarrassment, self-consciousness or mild humiliation you feel about the flat you live in, especially when comparing it with other people’s homes or when faced with the prospect of inviting someone over.
Flatshame can be caused by anything from questionable décor and ancient furniture to mould, landlord-standard magnolia walls, a depressing kitchen, a chaotic flatshare, or simply living somewhere that does not match the version of your life you would ideally like other people to see.
Verb (Flatshame/Flatshaming): To make someone feel embarrassed or inferior about the condition, appearance, size, location or general quality of their flat.
This can be deliberate (openly mocking someone’s home) or indirect, such as making horrified comments about their rent, furniture, kitchen or living arrangements.
