In World of Warcraft, when your character has a lot of mismatched gear. Mainly done because the stats on the mismatched gear are better than the stats of gear that would otherwise match.

Yeah, my clownsuit looks kind of weird all together. But check out my DPS.

Let's see, we've got a lurid green T-Shirt, a bright red jacket, some black denim jeans and a pair of bright white sneakers.

Clown Suit 

In some MMO's the collection of equipment that provides the best stats do not aesthetically match (so called Best in Slot, so while your character may be performing the best that they can with the equipment, they resemble a clown in the mismatched colors and styles of the armor that they're wearing.

With that last piece of shoulder armor that I got, I'm now wearing a clown suit.
