shack job

Dr. Laura's blunt and intemperate way of referring to any couple that cohabit without benefit of marriage. Also, and in particular, any woman who "puts up with" such an arrangement, regardless of whether or not marriage is in the foreseeable future. See under mistress.
Caller begins by saying: "Dr. Laura, here's my problem. I've been living with my boyfriend for six years, and--"
Schlessinger interrupts: "So you're a shack job."
Caller (hesitantly): "Well..."
Schlessinger: "OK, we've established that. Let's move on..."
