Serotonin

A neurotransmitter believed to regulate mood. SSRI's inhibit the reuptake of serotonin in the brain (leading there to be more serotonin left as a result), hopefully improving the mood.

Personally, a good blast on the Codeine cheers me up more than any SSRI.
Perhaps it's my endorphine system rather than my serotoninergic system that is fucked.

A lack of Serotonin is believed to be a cause of depression. It also controls appetite, among other things.

Antidepressants often (through various mechanisms) increase the amount of serotonin in the brain.

MDMA (Ecstacy) causes a massive (cascading) release of serotonin in the brain - responsible for both it's euphoric effects, and the depressive aftereffects (less serotonin remains in the brain, until generated again)

Serotonin

A neurotransmitter that is most known for regulating mood.

While the release of serotonin has been commonly associated with producing feelings of happiness and content, it is a misconception that this is its primary function (it's not). Serotonin's range of functions in the human body are very broad and complex. The chemical plays a crucial role in cognition, memory, reward, and learning as well as numerous physiological processes such as vomiting and the constriction of blood vessels. Without Serotonin, you probably would not even be alive.

Person 2: Same! I can feel the good vibes flow through me.
Me: I hate to be a party pooper, but FYI Serotonin isn't entirely responsible for giving you "the good vibes". What you are describing is a complex rush of hormones and neurotransmitters made up of serotonin as well as dopamine, oxytocin, and other endorphins. These are commonly referred to as your "happy hormones".

When on the drug MDMA (Ecstasy) as serotonin trickles down your spinal cord someone stands behind the intoxicated and push all their muscles on their back upwards and into their head as the person receiving the serotonin bomb hyperventilates, they then rub their shoulders and have the person stand up extremely fast causing a burst of renewed serotonin.

I was getting into a bad roll and K gave me a serotonin bomb, I was better in seconds.
