The Marathas (Mahratta, Marhatta or मराठा) are a royal Hindu Kshatriya (Warrior) caste from Maharashtra, and are credited for re-establishing Hindu rule in India, by ending the Mughal rule.
The Maratha Empire was founded by 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsle' and at its peak, the empire covered much of India, encompassing a territory of over 2.8 million km²
