Maafa is a Kiswahili for term meaning "
Great Disaster. It has come to be associated with the era of the European and Arab
slave trade. The resulting effect on African people: over 100 million people lost their lives and their descendants have been systematically and continuously assaulted through institutionalized anti-Africanism.
Ubuntu is the opposite of Maafa and was the dominant paradigm in
Africa leading up to it.
Examples of the Maafa include Jim
Crow segregation, lynching, apartheid, colonialism,
neo-colonialism, lynching, forced sterilizations, slavery, Post Traumatic
Slave Syndrome and Stockholm syndrome.
