A noise, usually used on Instant Messanger or e-mail when in doubt, upsetted, or angered. A sign of being unpleased.

Person 1 : I didn't get you a Christmas present.
Person 2 : Why not?
Person 1 : Because I don't like you anymore.
Person 2 : -crosses arms- Hmpfh.

hmph mode

The super cute (joking)mode your girlfriend enters into after you do something she only kind of dislikes. I.e. didn't hold her hand, just teased her, almost gave her a kiss and pulled out, just pulled out in general. She may also pout and turn her back to you, in pretense that she's mad, knowing you won't be able to resist her cuteness.

Yopyo: You in hmph mode baby?
Chelle: Hmph
Yopyo: *smiles, hugs Chelle*
Chelle: *still hmphing*
