Bastard Gas

Pejorative of "Butane", the inflammible agent used in lighters. Coined by Hank Hill when someone so much as suggests that it has as much use as propane.

Bastard gas

A bastard gas is a stupid gas that is good for almost nothing because it can’t be used for cooking or turning on grills. Butane is not a bastard gas. Pentane is a bastard gas. 1-Pentene is a bastard gas. Isopentane is a bastard gas. Ethyl chloride is a bastard gas with a boiling point of 54.14°F 12.3°C. Ethanol is a bastard gas. Anything flammable chemical with a boiling point of 54.14°F 12.3°C or higher, or any non flammable chemical is a bastard gas. If it's a liquid at standard room temperature (68°F-77°F, 20°C-25°C) and pressure (1 atmosphere), it's definitely a bastard gas. Some "Bastard gases" make great solvents in the laboratory for extraction or chemical reactions.
Pentane is a bastard gas. It's boiling point of 96.98°F (36.1°C) makes it a liquid at room temperature and useless for gas grilling and refilling butane lighters.

Hank: Bobby! Stop playing around with that bastard gas pentane and help me hook up the butane to the gas grill, since they didn't have propane.
