Sitz is German for phony, as in Sitzkrieg, meaning phony war. The word came about in the fall and winter of 1939-1940 when there was little fighting. In actuality, Hitler was waiting until spring to resume Blitzkrieg(lightning war).

Describes the behaviour of German tourists who arise at the crack of dawn on holiday or vacation to rush down to the pool or beach in order to reserve a lounge chair for themselves.

Because of the Sitzkreig down at the beach, the non-German tourists were forced to lay on their towels or blankets.
