The process by which fields gradually becoming dominated by men gain in perceived value, to the point where it's often forgotten that they were originally dominated by women (e.g. computers, Star Trek fandom); and by which fields gradually becoming dominated by women lose perceived value, to the point where it's often forgotten that they were originally dominated by men (e.g. nursing, secretarial work).

A play on the word "gentrification."

Nursing has suffered some serious mentrification for people to forget that it used to be mostly men!

mentrification

When something once known as something made by or popular with women is suddenly taken over by men and essentially becomes something that women can't be interested in/partake in anymore. Then said thing will be vigorously protected by gatekeepers who will try and keep women out of it and will shun women still in the community. This can work in reverse with women also, which can be called Womanification.

Woman 1: Remember when Star Trek was something you and I would talk about in our living rooms over tea before all of this convention stuff came around?

Woman 2: I remember that quite clearly, now I can't even mention I like the show around other fans. Otherwise they'll bombard me with questions like "Who was the very first captions' mother's name????" rudely and expect me not to answer, and when I do they just insult me and call me a 'fake fan' anyways!

Woman 1: Damn, the Mentrification of Star Trek really hit hard huh?

Gentrification

When "urban renewal" of lower class neighbourhoods with condos attracts yuppie tenants, driving up rents and driving out long time, lower income residents. It often begins with influxes of local artists looking for a cheap place to live, giving the neighbourhood a bohemian flair. This hip reputation attracts yuppies who want to live in such an atmosphere, driving out the lower income artists and lower income residents, often ethnic/racial minorities, changing the social character of the neighbourhood.

It also involves the "yuppification" of local businesses; shops catering to yuppie tastes like sushi resaturants, Starbucks, etc... come to replace local businesses displaced by higher rents.

The term was coined by sociologist Ruth Glass, who is quoted below.

"One by one, many of the working class quarters of London have been invaded by the middle-classes—upper and lower. Shabby, modest mews and cottages—two rooms up and two down—have been taken over, when their leases have expired, and have become elegant, expensive residences .... Once this process of 'gentrification' starts in a district it goes on rapidly until all or most of the original working-class occupiers are displaced and the whole social character of the district is changed."

When you buy a house that hasn’t been painted in 30 years and finally put some paint on that thing.

All these yuppies are contributing to gentrification in my neighborhood with their mid-century gray tones and turquoise accents.
