W. Somerset Maugham. Remarkable playwright, author, and world traveler. Excellent narrator. Must have registered the features of every human being he ever encountered. Rather fatalistic.

W. Somerset Maugham rather likes to see his characters suffer. At least one of them. Not in every writing, but there is a reaccuring theme.
