Ţigan

Romanian word for "gipsy". The only correct way of calling a gipsy in Romanian. We never say "rom" or "rrom", because the stupid Westerns confuse Romanians with gippos.

"Ţigan" is NOT a derogatory term for "gipsy". We have "cioară" (nigger) for that.

Mircea Lucescu este unul dintre puţinii ţigani pe care îi apreciez.

Ţigan

A Romanian word for Gypsy (Romani) that is loaded with negative connotations. Many use it to avoid confusing Romani for Romanians, however a better alternative is Romi. Romi used to be enslaved in certain parts of Romania, the word tigan implies slave status. A lot of non-Romi will tell you it’s not offensive, but that’s because it’s not targeted at them. Though not the worst word, most Romi find it offensive and degrading. When Romi use it towards each other it’s fine. Even if it’s the direct translation of Gypsy, it’s meaning in Romanian shows how negative it is. You wouldn’t see such definition for other ethnicities.

The most loving, caring, loyal and trustworthy person you'll ever meet. The best friend you could ever have. She can be shy at times but has the most outgoing and crazy personality once she is comfortable with you. She's normally the prettiest one in the group but doesn't let that go to her head. Tigan (Romanian) or Gangster is word to describe gangsters in Romania, such as Gypsies.

Vlad: “Ugh I can’t stand Tigans, they always steal my stuff!
Stefan: “Not all tigans are bad you know”
