The terms "Shoggy" and "Shoggothic" is derive from "Shoggoth," a fictional creature first introduced in H.P. Lovecraft's 1936 novella "At the Mountains of Madness," and the suffix "-ic" to form an adjective. In the context of AI, "Shoggothic" originated from a
popular meme that emerged in late
2022 and
2023. The meme, which depicted a Shoggoth adorned with a smiley face mask, captured the duality of AI—its inscrutable complexity beneath a
friendly, sanitized exterior. This image became a widespread metaphor among AI researchers and developers to describe the unpredictable and opaque nature of AI systems, particularly language models, and the attempt to render them more palatable through techniques like Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).
