Get the kounai mug.A "kouhai" is your junior at work, school, or a group. Usually they belong to the same organization as you but they entered the organization after you. A "kouhai" could also be someone who has entered the same "industry" as you but at a later date. In this case "industry" has a very broad meaning, e.g. the entertainment industry, a professional sports league.

Get the Kouhai mug.Similar to a trowel, the kunai is a wrought iron multi-purpose tool originating in the Tensho Era of Japan (1573 - 1592). The kunai blade was unsharpened, soft iron, and was used for digging, prying, and smashing wood, plaster, and the like -- which would like have destroyed a tool which was sharpened or heat-treated.
While generally a leaf shaped blade atop a handle with a ring at the end, the kunai come in a number of different varieties, including short, long, narrow, wide, and saw-toothed. Due to the nature of ninjutsu's training with improvised and unusual weapons, the kunai became popularly associated with ninja (shinobi no mono), who might have used it as a weapon in disguise.

Get the kouhai mug.They hide their true feelings to show it only to people that are special to them. But sometimes other people find out. They feel weak but they actually have a strong soul that can resist the toughest of times. Sometimes they feel pain when they’re alone, but they push on. Not everyone sees how much they are actually worth. They are extremely unique as well. You can spot them in a crowd with ease. But they want to prove themselves wrong to meet everyone’s expectations. However, only a few people know the real Kouni. They hide their pain far away from others. They are tired on living like that. They want someone to carry their regrets, their fears, their sin and their self-hatred. They want to be free.
They are the best loyal, caring and understanding friends you could ever have. If you’re friends with a Kouni, make sure he stays your friend. If he ever feels down, talk to him about things that you both like and enjoy. Sometimes he’s as happy as he could ever be, but sometimes he feels depressed or suicidal. He will use his strong soul to overcome it but you still have to help him on the way. When you’re around him and he’s happy, you’re guaranteed to feel at least a tingle of happiness. Kounis make the world a better place.

It was first defined and named in Japanese light novel Oregairu vol. 1 page 46.
The actual text of the novel are
“Kounibyou is simply Kounibyou. A common state of mind experienced by high school students. They think that being cynical is cool and always express views that are popular on the internet such as ‘Work and you lose to the system’. When referring to popular novelists and manga writers, they say ‘I like the books they wrote before they became popular’. They mock things that everybody worships and praise those that are obscure. And on top of that, they make fun of otakus even though they are like them. While giving off an air like they understand everything, they spout twisted logic. Basically, they’re unlikable.”
