Coined when in 1966 when the University of Texas tower sniper shooting happened, one of the first and deadliest mass shootings, which the shooter went "in (top of the) the tower" and shot random people on the ground.

2. When someone loses their head and does something crazy and/or that they regret, violent or non-violent.

Someone in the tower may hurt themselves and/or others.

This phrase comes from boxing. When a boxer is too beat up to continue, his coach throws a towel into the ring to signal that the fight is over.
1) The company threw in the towel after losing all of its major customers.

Towers in the Mist 

When two tall strangers, usually in a country with where people are shorter, see each other across a crowded area and feel compelled to acknowledge each other like two towers in the mist.
Walking in the crowded streets of Hong Kong, I was always head and shoulders above everyone else on the street except for another westerner across the street. We acknowledged each other and the silly situation with a head nod, much like towers in the mist.
