Roguelife

A game that resets most or all player stats and items in each death/failure, and in which the 'looping' mechanigc is a core facet of the overall narrative (e.g., in-game characters are aware of the looping phenomenon and/or the game's mechanics or environments change significantly as a result of previous runs)
Guy 1: "Have you checked out Deathloop?"
Guy 2: "No man, I don't like the repetitiveness of roguelikes and roguelites"

Neo-Roguelike

Defined by Derek Yu describing his game Spelunky. Also called roguelites, these games feature a resetting progression system like Rogue's, but incorporate other gameplay elements like platforming or dungeon-crawling. The period of neo-roguelikes is either still continuing, or ended around 2015.
Hey Edmund, you've never played any neo-roguelikes? Go die in Isaac or Spelunky 400 times and we'll talk about it afterwards.
