It is in Webster's Unabridged, as an Old English word which basically means messed up, or FUBAR. The Carteret language is the closest to Shakespeare's in the world, due to their lengthy isolation.

A Mother to a child. The only way I've ever heard it used. Yeah I'm from coastal NC. Morehead City. My Aunts from Wades shore on Shackleford (1880's)used it this way as did the younger of my sisters. Newer uses have apparently arrived. Evolution.

Boffin
British slang for a scientist or technical expert, esp . when the speaker is not certain of the expert’s specific field of study. Not necessarily derogatory, but typically used by persons without a technical background. In the US, the equivalent would be “egghead”, “squint”, or “geek.”
Origin of the word is unknown. Started sometime in World War 2. Given the typical evolution of British slang, could easily have started because what these experts did was confusing or “baffling” to the common person.
