Mama's basement syndrome is a psychological syndrome which primarily affects men who are acquiring masters degrees but who haven't moved out of their mother's basement yet. Symptoms include lack of self-esteem, self-doubt, guilt, fear for the future, sexual frustration and severe dependence on family members.
Richard is happy that he's getting his PhD in philosophy, but he also suffers from mama's basement syndrome and finds it very difficult to move out of his parents' house. He's afraid his girlfriend will leave him if she finds out where he really lives.
