Yemaya (Yemoja, Iamanja) is the orisha (goddess) of the ocean in Afro-Caribbean
religions such as Santeria, and in many modern Pagan faiths. She is depicted as a mermaid in the ocean, or a woman in her 30s on land, where she wears flowing white clothes and blue beads. She is of mixed race, and is the
particular guardian of mothers and children, and of those recovering from
gender violence.
