Skullstep
Skullstep is a subgenre of Darkstep, which itself is a subgenre of drum and bass. It features heavy drum breaks and a dark atmosphere. The drums are complex and use more complex patterns compared to the 2 Step. The kicks are punchy and the snares are ringy and usually metallic. Skullstep songs also commonly uses multiple breaks, switching between them to add variation. Skullstep mainly uses reese basses and dark, distorted stabs.
It first emerged in the mid 2000s with main artists making this genre being Technical Itch, Current Value, and Limewax who pioneered the genre. It got popular during the late 2000s thanks to it being played by many shows and songs being put on compilations. It was still somewhat popular in the early 2010s but pretty much lost popularity after that. It is currently a dead genre as only a few producers (such as Donny, Katharsys, and Sinister Souls) are still making songs in this genre, with the original producers having stopped producing skullstep. The only labels still active (that I know of, there may be more) are Prspct and Barcode recordings. Despite that it has actually influenced a few tracks here and there that have drum programming reminiscent of Skullstep.
Some Skullstep songs I would recommend would be:
Current Value - You can't play god
Donny - The forgotten
Limewax - Everything
Gein - Father of lies
Spektrum - Transmission
