The word orignated in Sydney years ago around the North Shore and seems to have spread Australia wide in a matter of years. There is a suburb named Chatswood in Sydney, the word was first used by a small group of individuals from the North Shore who had a disliking for a group of individuals from Chatswood. So if you were trying to offend your Shorey mate, you would call him Chat, or if you saw something shit, ugly etc, you would call it chat.

1, A phrase used in the UK to summarise someone's conversational ability. Usually used when speaking to a friend about someone you've just spoken to for the first time. This is the noun form of 'chat'.

2, When used as a verb to "chat" means to talk at ones leisure, usually to mates.

3, Chatting (same meaning as the above).

4, "Chatting up", distinctively different from the former. It means to speak flirtatiously with someone you usually intend to sleep with.
1, "Mate, that birds fit but her chat stinks!"

"I don't like your chat boy!"

2, "Just go chat to him and sort it out!"

"Alright mate, Haven't seen you in ages! Fancy going for a pint and a chat a bit later on?"

3, "What you chatting bout?"

"He was in there chatting away"

4, "Mate see that bird over there? I started chatting her up, but it turned out she has a fellah!"

"Are you trying to chat me up boy?"

More from Urban Dictionary
West Midlands slang word for rockers, bikers, greasers etc. In the late 1980s it was used by the UK music press to refer to a specific scene centered around the bands Pop Will Eat Itself and Crazyhead. The term never found favour with readers of 'the inkies' (Sounds, Melody Maker and the still extant NME) and was soon dropped. Now often used in predominantly working-class areas of the midlands and the north to mean someone who listens to rock-derived music and/or dresses in a manner that suggests they affiliate themselves with rock music of some kind.
