The word has become more popular along with the 1. rise of social media and 2. identity politics. In other words, social media has created an environment in which identity within a particular social or political group (E.g. leftist, feminist, conservative, LGBTQ, "person of color," antifa, free-speech supporters) has become valued over individuality and nuance, and therefore anyone who acts outside of strictly defined group norms stands out, even to the point of potentially beings seen as untrustworthy. "Cringey" is a word used to describe behavior that does not fit neatly within prescribed social limits and makes members of the group who strongly identify with those social limits uncomfortable.
It was so cringey when my friend, who I thought shared my leftist political beliefs said "it's ok to be white" even though he said it was a joke.

Get the crunge music mug.Crungry- When your at a restaurant and have made up your mind on what you want, and the waiter brings out the food for the table right next to you, and all you want is to find out what they ordered because it looks that good that you start to contemplate whether to go through with the food that you were originally going to chose or if you should switch to whatever they have. So you go into this mode where you blur everything around you out and really think about which one you think is better. Then you decide on the original choice because it was what you wanted at first so you think its what you really want, and then the waiter arrives. As soon as the waiter asks what you want to order you suddenly switch instantly to whatever the table had and hope for the best.
