YOUR Lesson

Did you learn YOURS?
Hym "Did you learn YOUR lesson? Did you learn the difference between natural and imposed consequences yet? Because I didn't impose anything on anyone. You have to come here (where ever HERE is) to see me. That's something you're doing voluntarily. I told you not to do the thing that was going to get your kids killed. You did that deliberately. YOU, on the other hand, are trying to impose consequences on me, with authority you don't actually have, and using your kids a post hoc justification. So... What happened? What actually happened, you know, like, in actuality? Because... It looks like you tried to impose some consequences there and then incurred some natural consequences... I mean, at a glance. Right? That IS what happened there right? I mean, who knows! Maybe I'm just a delusional schizophrenic."

You think me an old fogeyand an old tory, his thoughtful voice said. I saw three generations since O’Connel’s time. I remember the famine. Do you know that the orange lodges agitated for repeal of the union twenty years before O’Connel did or before the prelates of your communion denounced him as a demagogue? You fenians forget some things. (James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin Books,1992. p. 38)
