A running gag is that he is slow to react and forgetful of trivial items, which pertain no usefulness whatsoever to his investigation, allowing suspects to get rid of any incriminating evidence. He is also seen often during a time of distress or extreme relief engaging in a sorrowful, half-sobbing dialogue with one of his dead parents.
