"Gachupín" is a derogatory name that is applied in Mexico and Central
America to Spaniards. There was also formerly the "cachopín" form,
now unused. In other parts of Latin
America, cachupín is used, with the same meaning.
Gachupín is an eponym derived from a northern Spanish hidalgo surname : the Cachopines , from Laredo , currently Cantabria , and popularized in the golden centuries as a stereotype and literary figure representing the hidalgos, a relatively
high social class caricatured as arrogant. The cachopín , guachapín , cachupín and cachupino forms are also registered.
