pretendship 

A false friendship that two people honor because they feel like they have to, not because they actually want to.
This generally involves a male and a female relationship in which person A likes person B and hopes to be more than friends, while the person B keeps person A there out of sheer pity, which results in person B thinking he or she has a chance with person A.

Elliot: I'm sick of my pretendship with him.

Dick: Then ditch him. You know he wants to get back together with you, and you know that you don't care about him AT ALL.

Elliot: But...

Dick: Lingering in this pretendship will do you both damage in the end. He will only think you are leading him on.

Elliot: True dat.

pretendster 

A spurious personality registered on a social networking website: very often the individual is claiming to be someone famous, although sometimes the name assumed, and the asscociated character, are completely invented.

Associated terms: foaf; Friendster; fakester; troll; IP

"In this online age of fluid and epic identities, there are Friendsters and there are pretendsters ... This person, whoever they are, ain't no Friendster. She's a lower-cased anti-social butterfly-troll - effecting stagnation amidst the six degrees of separation. Upstanding internet users aren't ashamed to let others know exactly who they are: IP's ain't herpes! She is posing as the pop star, Chrissie Hynde, but I doubt the real Chrissie Hynde would be friends with someone who, it says in their profile, is an inspector for the guild of butchers. The real Chrissie Hynde is an outspoken vegetarian and even her band, called "The Pretenders", never stooped to actually pretending to be someone else. Did you know that Chrissie Hynde cuts her own hair?"
