To casually drop the name of a famous person who you, a friend or relative know, so as to appear cool vicariously because you know a famous person.

Hey, my brother was hanging out with (insert celebrity name here) the other day. He says they're pretty cool.

Man, I hate Ben. His dad works in the entertainment industry so all he does is name drop all day.

verb. While in conversation, to bring up a name that provokes memories or opinions from those involved in the conversation.

Person A: You hear that Gwynn and Ripkin got into the hall?
Person B: Yeah but Albert Belle was the man during the nineties.
Person A: Ooooh.. good name drop.

Appears in the feature film, "Grandma's Boy", in a scene in which "Super Mario" and "Dad" are "dropped" in conversation.

Name Drop Violation

When somebody you know who is a notorious "name-dropper " crosses the line and starts to reference unpopular people as famous or people that have too many degrees of separation from "said"celebrity, hence siblings, in-laws or distant relations as famous or interesting in any way.

Pablo was pumped to have the sister of the founder of a "major silicon valley social media company" attend his happy hour, Roberto and I both felt this was a major "Name Drop Violation".

A usually vain person who is severely insecure about his/her popularity/image, and must resort to the inclusion of names of the opposite sex and/or popular people who have little/no relevance to the conversation topic in order to achieve a self-gratifying level of social acceptance and/or ego boost. However, attempt to impress others with 'name-dropping' are quite easy to see through, and in turn, the person is seen as a complete wanker.

Name Dropper: I picked up Chrissie, Helen, Ally and heaps of other girls on my way to the party last night.
Person 2: Who? I've never heard of any of them
Name Dropper: You know, the girls... they all want me too I heard

Referring to someone who is popular or famous in order to let the other person know that you yourself are popular and actually have friends. The event being described is usually a lie, or the story was exaggerated. Most of the time name dropping is used by people who think they are cool, but are not.
Can become very hazardous to one's mental and sometimes physical health.

Julio: "I was just chilling with my boy Will Smith, and we hella partied and shit."
Matt: "Did you really dude? That makes you hella cool."
Louis: "Shaaam, i think you're just name dropping."

Someone who constantly mentions celebrities, politicians, executives, or popular individuals in conversation with others in an attempt to seem cooler or more elite than average. Name droppers salivate at the opportunity to mention they have met/known/seen a famous person, and will insert a famous name into any conversation possible, despite how obscure or irrelevant the celebrity is.

John: I thought Gina was so down to earth, then I realized she was a total name dropper when she mentioned her dad knew the drummer from the Smashing Pumpkins and that her best friend's uncle was Dave Chapelle.

Jessica: Haha, she told me her brother-in-law's neighbor is Carrie Underwood. Stupid name dropping bitch.
